Virgile's
Vineyard
-A Year in the Languedoc Wine Country
by Patrick Moon. This is the first book from a new arrival in the
Languedoc. After finishing his studies in French and History Patrick
Moon entered the legal profession in London. He inherited a neglected
house and olive grove in the St. Saturnin region of the Languedoc
and this book tells how a one year sabbatical turned into a new
life in the Midi. Structured into 12 monthly chapters it unfolds
the story of wine in the Languedoc through the ages and through
the annual cycle of the vigneron. Working with the small but enterprising
Virgile Joly, a new start-up independent vigneron. Moon takes us
from pruning through to the vendage, harvesting, and finally the
actual production of the wine. Interspersed with this a brief but
engaging history of wine in the Languedoc, from it's Greek roots
through to modern day issues of over production and the search for
quality over quantity. There are many amusing and insightful asides
into both the characters of the Languedoc and the growing olive
industry and, in cases semi-legal, Marc distillers and highly illegal
black market trade in truffles
There
is much in this book that the old Languedoc hands will already have
imbibed along with their daily verre du rouge. But Moon's eye and
style give the history a freshness which is appealing and there
are still surprises along the way.
For
the visitor to the Aude and Languedoc it is a enjoyable and light-hearted
introduction to the central activity of the rural Languedoc as well
as a number of great pointers to things to do and places to see.
It has been billed with a quote from Paul Levy, "The perfect
antidote to Peter Mayle". Is it? Well maybe, it avoids a lot
of the patronising characterisations so common in Mayle. Although
I can't help but feel that the figures of Manu and Kristina are
literary devices used in order to tell lighten the narrative style
and avoid falling into a monologue on the history of the wine or
the old production values of the Languedoc wine industry. As such
I did feel that they were a little over played and had moments of
Maylesch about them which I found annoying. Equally at times I found
the rythmn a little slow, but I did read it in one sitting which
does not really do the author the justice he deserves. For all that
I really enjoyed the book. I learnt much about places I thought
I already knew. The process of watching Moon fall for the area,
our people, countryside and way of life was very heart warming,
and hopefully a little infectious. I hope that this is the start
of a long and erudite career. There is so much hidden in the hills
and on the plains of the Languedoc that the subject matter will
hardly be exhausted if the author can bear the pace. Buy this book
