Greens support wind farms and denounce incinerators |
The
Greens annual general meeting in the Aude, at La Redorte, demanded
an end to incinerators for waste disposal in the Aude. Reluctantly
they supported the building of a second Centre d'enfouissent technique
(CET), landfill waste disposal centre, without committing themselves
to promoting any particular location. Alongside this half hearted
endorsement went the usual denouncement of the general wastage in
packaging and the use of non recycled paper and excessive use of plastic
in consumer goods packaging. On the subject of wind generation and
renewable energy they enthusiastically supported the extension of
wind generators throughout the Aude, but on a small scale so as not
to endanger migratory birds, and not on protected or beautiful countryside,
at the same time as supporting a large expansion of protected sites
throughout the Aude. They were strangely silent on the proposed wind
farms off the coast. However they were clear in their condemnation
of the Aude Prefecture in vetoing repeatedly planning permission of
wind farms, Maryse Arditi, Vice President of the Region with responsibility
for professional training said, "It takes six months to build
a wind generator park- and six years to get permission. If we change
this situation fast it is going to be other regions that benefit from
the employment opportunities wind generation provides." On the
European Constitution the Greens are split, with some following the
Communists campaign for a No vote and others falling behind their
patrons, the Socialist Party and its Yes campaign.
The Aude Greens did well in this years Regional elections for the
Languedoc Rousillon with the Party Socialists boosting them on the
Union Toute! list at the cost of the more popular Communist Party,
2 Green delegates to the Region as opposed to one Communist. With
60 members in the Aude as opposed to the Communists 1,500, an average
vote of 5% against the Communists 7-15% they are particularly vulnerable
to pressure from the Party Socialist, pressure that the regional president,
George Freche has not been slow in applying. Maryse Arditti is facing
a series of increasingly hostile attacks from the Maire of Narbonne
of the canceling of Regional support for Nurses Training centre in
Narbonne, and the annulling of the life guard and swimming coach training
course also in her Narbonne home town. The complete stop on all adult
education funding that was imposed upon the Left's winning of power
in the Region has fallen heavily upon Arditti's shoulders and without
a doubt has alienated some of the Green's electoral support in the
education community.
The charismatic Green Aude general secretary, Marc Ventura, stepped
down to be replaced by Michel Cornuet, but the media friendly activist
from Carcassonne will continue to be the official spokesperson for
the Party.
