Carcassonne
Salvaza Airport(Soon to be renamed to Carcassonne Pays Cathar) is
small and efficient, it is however the largets international airport
by numbers in the Languedoc. Only used now by Ryanair
it still saw 215,213 passanger arrivals in 2002, growing to just
under 320,000 in 2003 now that Ryanair
have their Brussels route up and running. There is even a possibility
that they may fly in from their new hub at Franfurt Hain- they already
fly to Perpignan from Germany. The Carcassonne-Dublin route is launching
in April 2005
The services
at Carcassonne airport include a sandwich bar, a suprisingly good
restaurant and bar on the first floor, a newspaper and local produce
shop, a bank ATM cashpoint, a motel opposite. Carcassonne airport
itself is of course fully accessible with reserved parking-though
I don't think there is a lift to the first floor restaurant. There
is a taxi stand in the forecourt although unless you are first off
the plane you may have a little wait as I have only counted 4 taxis
at most ranked up. A bus service also runs from the airport to the
centre of Carcassonne, train station and La Cité.
Parking is no
longer free and although enlarged still tends to get full when both
the London and Brussels planes arrive. I always go early and get
a great lunch in at the restaurant if I'm travelling or picking
up.
Car rental is
available at the airport
